"The price of steel to the manufacturer is cheaper and more stable than that of aluminum because it is more readily available, and there are enough steel companies vying for the market to create a more competitive environment. Steel has a higher yield strength, tensile strength, fatigue strength, and impact resistance that aluminum for a lot less money."

On aluminum horse trailers the"...welds, bolts, frames, and floors may be suffering from fatigue stress on trailers that were not built very well, even though they still look good."

Beware of Economical aluminum horse trailers:"A good-quality aluminum trailer will have steel 'sub frame'..."

"Other parts of so-called all-aluminum trailers that may be steel are hinge pins, tie rings, and ramp springs. If steel is used for these parts it should be stainless steel."

"What does all this mean? It means that you depend on the manufacturer to know how to build a safe aluminum trailer. Even though high-grade aluminum is available, the manufacturer must actually use it where it counts. Beware of the cheap all-aluminum trailer, it's probably too good to be true."
